The words Bobb's Café have come to mean two different things to students on University of Maryland's campus.
For some, Bobb's Café is the name of a student group established a few years ago for students to meet up and hang out. For others, its an integral part of the Hillel Dining Menu.
Now, the two "Bobb's Cafés" are attempting to converge.
When Jacob Silvermetz was a freshman three years ago, he started an event on campus that used the location where Bob's Café- the restaurant now stands. They called themselves Bobb's Café, a group for students to connect, eat good food, listen to live entertainment and relax.
As time went on the popularity of Bobb's Café grew and the group got bigger. But Hillel had different ideas for Bobb's Café, according to Silvermetz.
Hillel took many of the same ideas that the Bobb's Café group had, including "fun, grabbable food" and eventually made it an institutionalized venue and a part of the Hillel Dining Plan.
"Bobb's has some good food," said freshman Brian Deane who has a meal plan through Hillel, "and the staff is incredible."
While the Hillel dining location has been open every day, the original Bobb's Café has been basically inactive for the past year. They have held just two events in the past two semesters. Silvermetz said this is partially due to the group not having its own space.
Silvermetz says the events they hold are simply social gatherings where students can "take a break." "It's nothing political or religious, just a place to reconnect with friends and classmates," said Silvermetz.
Silvermetz's current hope is that both Bobb's Cafe the student group and Bobb's Café the institutionalized venue at Hillel can come together.
Bobb's Café after hours were created to allow students to host an event in the Bobb's Café location. The space can be rented from 9 to 11 pm, according to Silvermetz and the after-hours time slot allows Bobb's Café to become the social group it once was.
Any student can rent out after hours as long as both an employee of Bobb's Café and a mashgiach are present, and the venue offers tons of food options and a great place to hang out, according to Silvermetz.
So what is Bobb's Café now?
"Bobb's Café is an integral part of the Hillel meal plan and it's a terrific venue for students, providing delicious foods during excellent social experiences," said Silvermetz.
