Who wouldn't want to spend their Saturday night dressed in styles from the 1980s and dancing along to Jewish tunes?
On Saturday, September 6, Kedma sponsored an eighties-themed night with live music by Shlock Rock, a world-renowned Jewish rock and roll band that turns classic tunes into hits for the Jewish soul.
"I grew up on this stuff. My dad always had the songs playing in his car. I love it," said Elliot Meiteles, a sophomore letters and sciences major.
Meiteles' father is a longtime friend of Shlock Rock's creator and lead singer, Lenny Solomon, who now lives in Israel.
"He is amazing," said Meiteles. "The fact that he can take songs and put Judaism into them, and he sounds great doing it."
The featured band started in 1985 and takes hit music from genres including pop, rap, rock and country, and infuses the lyrics with Jewish themes and concepts.
"We're still going strong," said Lenny Solomon during the show, referring to the band's 30 albums, many of which are commonly-played to children.
"I grew up on this music. I can sing along to almost any song," said sophomore nutrition science major Danielle Gans.
Beth Magid, senior special education major and president of the host group, called the welcame back event a success, estimating at least 150 people in attendance.
"People stayed a lot longer than expected. It was great to see everyone singing and dancing along," said Magid, who recalled seeing the band perform at age seven.
Magid said students had been trying to arrange for the band to come to campus for many years because Shlock Rock is "fun and reminds students of growing up."
Like many other students who consider themselves fans, Magid remembers listening to Shlock Rock back in the day of cassette tapes and 1980s fashions.

That looks like lots of fun. When I was in college we didn't had so many fun activities.
