New ethical kosher seal in works

If all goes according to plan, by next year, kosher food will answer to another authority. In July, the Conservative Jewish movement pushed for an ethical kashrut certification called Hekhsher Tzedek, which would require participating kosher food processors to meet certain ethical standards regarding employees during the manufacturing process.

Israel, Maryland follow green trend

It seems like everything and everyone is "going green" these days. Google went green, the Emmy Awards went green, this summer's Beijing Olympics went green and there are even plans in the works to make Hummers go green. One hundred fifty elementary schools in Israel and the University of Maryland can now be added to the green list.

Hillel inaugurates brand new meal plan

This semester, Hillel launched its brand-new kosher meal plan and unveiled building renovations costing approximately $150,000. Sodexo, an international dining provider and catering company, signed a five-year contract with Hillel, took over the dining hall and renovated Bobb's Café to provide an "all-you-care-to-eat system and extended dining hours," said Director of Operations of Maryland Hillel Danny Weiss.

UMD launches Kollel program

University of Maryland students now have an outlet for structured Jewish learning. The Maryland Kollel program, which officially began on Sept. 7, asks students to commit to studying one of three designated Jewish religious texts for five or 10 hours a week for the course of the semester.

MJX team expands, welcomes new staff

Fall semester brings big change for the popular Maryland Jewish Experience, headed by Rabbi Ozzie Burnham and Rabbi Ari Koretzky. The staff has recently expanded, with the new edition of Shani Levin from Baltimore. "Shani is young, charismatic, and will be a great new edition to the staff," Koretzky said.

Staff additions bring fresh ideas, energy to Hillel

This semester Maryland Hillel welcomes two new enthusiastic members to its staff: Engagement Director Deborah Vishnevsky and Jewish Student Life Coordinator for Tzedek Marissa Neuman. Vishnevsky, who usually goes by Debbie, did not expect to be working at Maryland Hillel when she began her studies at Cornell University.
