From the checkered tablecloths to the buttermilk pancakes and oldies blaring over the stereo system, Mike's City Diner is a no-frills kickback most college students can afford.

Located at 1714 Washington St. in the South End, the diner seems to have come out of the 1950s: The servers are exceptionally friendly, chatting with customers about everything from clothing to Celtics games; countertops are painted fire-engine red; there are no televisions and diners are in clear view of the open kitchen.

The Ohio Historical Center hosted the 2008 statewide tribute to Rosa Parks Monday, with a keynote speech from Robert Graetz, a close friend of Parks.

Monday marked the 52nd anniversary of Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat for a white man, ultimately sparking the famed Montgomery bus boycott. Graetz, a renown civil rights activist, along with his wife Jeanie, recognized Parks' courage but challenged the youth in the audience to stand up for their own beliefs

"The economy in Rhode Island is struggling," Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts '78 said in a press release.
